A single coconut frond holds more than enough leaf for a whole room of decorations. I have dressed tables, doorways and garden arches with nothing but one frond, a ball of twine and an afternoon.

The nine projects below are the ones I come back to, ordered from fastest to most involved. Most reuse folds you may already know from the bird and the flower.

Festival leaf work is different from a single figure. Here you are thinking in quantity and in how things hang, catch the light, and survive a warm room for a day or two. The good news is that the folds are simple and repeatable, so once one garland is made the next takes half the time.

## How much leaf you need

One medium coconut frond gives roughly twenty leaflets, which is enough for a 4-metre garland, eight hanging stars, and a table runner. If you are dressing a whole room, work out your total length first and divide by four metres per frond. It is far easier to gather enough leaf at the start than to go back for more once you have begun.

1. Simple garland - leaflets threaded on twine, one per 10 cm.
2. Layered bunting - folded leaf triangles hung from a doubled cord.
3. Hanging stars - five-point stars on short hanging loops.
4. Leaf flowers - rosettes pinned to napkins or chair backs.
5. Table runner - flat woven strips joined end to end.
6. Doorway arch - a bent willow hoop dressed with leaflets and flowers.
7. Hanging spirals - a strip twisted into a soft spiral on a thread.
8. Name cards - a small leaf flag tied to each place setting.
9. Lantern wraps - leaflets woven around a jar holding a candle.

*Thread garlands loosely; a tight line of leaves looks stiff and unnatural.*

## The three you can make tonight

**What You'll Need**

- 1 coconut frond (about 20 leaflets)
- Ball of natural twine
- Sharp scissors
- A needle with a large eye
- A spray bottle of water

**Making a basic leaf garland**

1. **Prepare the leaflets** — Strip the leaflets from the rib and trim each to about 20 cm. Mist them lightly so they stay flexible while you thread.
2. **Thread the twine** — Cut 4 metres of twine and thread it through a large needle. Tie a loop at one end to stop the leaves sliding off.
3. **Add the leaves** — Push the needle through the centre of each leaflet and slide it down the twine, spacing them about 10 cm apart.
4. **Alternate the angle** — Turn every second leaflet a quarter turn so the garland has body and does not lie flat against the wall.
5. **Tie off and hang** — Knot the far end, then hang the garland loosely in a soft curve rather than a straight line.

| Decoration | Leaves needed | Time | Lasts |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Simple garland (4 m) | 40 leaflets | 30 min | 2-3 days |
| Hanging stars (8) | 8 leaflets | 2 hours | 3-4 weeks |
| Table runner (2 m) | 30 leaflets | 90 min | 1 week |
| Doorway arch | 60 leaflets | 3 hours | 2-3 days |

**Dressing a room with leaves**

- Mist the leaflets as you work; dry ones split as you thread them.
- Hang garlands in soft curves, never pulled tight.
- Keep decorations out of direct sun or they brown within hours.
- Make more than you need; a few always split during threading.

> Never leave a lit candle inside a woven leaf lantern wrap without a glass holder. The leaf dries and becomes very flammable.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long do coconut leaf decorations last?

Indoors and out of direct sun, garlands look good for two to three days and hanging stars keep for three to four weeks. Heat and dry air shorten that a lot.

### How many leaflets are in one coconut frond?

A medium frond gives roughly twenty leaflets. That is enough for a 4-metre garland or eight hanging stars, so plan your total length before you start.

### Can I make coconut leaf decorations a day in advance?

Yes, but store them flat in a cool room and mist them lightly. Overnight in a dry, warm house will leave garlands brittle by morning.

### Are coconut leaf decorations safe around candles?

Only with a glass candle holder inside the wrap. Dried coconut leaf catches light very easily, so never put a naked flame directly against the leaf.
