Market baskets have carried vegetables for centuries, and the shape has barely changed because it works. An oval sits against your side instead of banging your leg, and one handle leaves the other hand free for a list or a child.
Built around the handle
The handle is woven first, as a stiff arch, and the basket is then built up around it. This is the reverse of how a decorative handle is usually added, and it means the load hangs from the weave itself rather than from two small attachment points that could eventually fray.
