A placemat has one job: to sit flat and stay out of the way. We weave these in a fine, dense over-under pattern that has almost no thickness, so plates and glasses never wobble on top of it.
A fine, dense weave
These take longer to make than they look. The strips are cut narrow, around a centimetre, and woven tightly so the surface is nearly smooth. The edges are bound with a folded strip of the same leaf, which keeps the corners from curling after a few washes.
