A gift box that is thrown away is a waste of good material. This one is woven to be kept. The lid fits closely enough to stay on when carried, and the box is strong enough to hold jewellery, letters or small treasures on a shelf afterwards.
Making the lid fit
The base and lid are woven as two separate squares, then matched by hand. We check the fit while both are still slightly damp, because the leaf shrinks a little as it dries. Get it right at that stage and the lid stays snug for years.

Fill it with tissue or a linen square if the gift is small, so it does not rattle when the lid is on.
