In short

A full tutorial for a woven mini bag from palm leaves. Build a square base, weave tight walls, and finish a neat rim and handle in about two hours.

This mini bag is a small basket with a handle, but the tight weave and the neat rim make it feel like a finished accessory rather than a craft project. It takes about two hours from cutting the first strip to knotting the handle.

It is the first project where tension really matters, so if you have already woven a simple basket, this is the natural next step.

What you are making

The finished bag is about 16 cm wide, 12 cm tall and 6 cm deep, with a cord handle that sits comfortably over the shoulder. It holds a phone, a small purse and a pair of sunglasses, which is exactly the point of a mini bag. The proportions matter: a bag wider than it is tall looks like a basket, so keep the height at about three-quarters of the width.

What You'll Need

  • 18 palm leaf strips, about 1.2 cm wide and 50 cm long
  • Sharp scissors
  • Natural cord or twisted twine for the handle, 80 cm
  • Two small clips or pegs
  • A spray bottle of water

Cut the strips along the leaf so the fibres run their full length, and cut more than you think you need. Tension mistakes and corner splits will cost you three or four strips, and it is frustrating to stop halfway for more leaf. Mist the strips lightly and keep them under a damp cloth while you work; dry palm leaf tears at the corners.

Weaving the mini bag

  1. 1

    Weave the base

Lay nine strips side by side and weave nine more across them in a plain over-under pattern to make a flat rectangle about 16 cm by 6 cm.

  2. 2

    Square the base

Push every row snug so no daylight shows through, then clip the base to the table edge to hold it flat while you turn the sides.

  3. 3

    Turn up the sides

Fold all the strips upward at the edge of the base and start weaving them around in a circle, over one strip and under the next.

  4. 4

    Weave the walls

Weave to about 12 cm of height, keeping the tension even. Add a new strip by tucking its end under the last two rows whenever one runs short.

  5. 5

    Fold the rim

Fold the final row over the previous one all the way around and tuck each end down into the weave to lock the rim.

  6. 6

    Fit the handle

Thread the cord through the rim on both sides, knot it inside the bag, and tuck the knot behind the weave so it cannot pull through.

Keep the walls vertical from the first row; a bag that flares early never squares up.

Keeping the walls vertical

The hardest part of a bag is stopping the walls from flaring outward. It happens when you pull the horizontal strips tighter than the upright ones. The fix is to fold every upright strip straight up, at a true right angle, before you weave the first horizontal row, and then to weave with the same tension you used on the base. If a wall starts to lean, undo one row and fold the uprights back to vertical rather than trying to correct it higher up.

Tutorial notes from the bench

  • Fold uprights to a true right angle before the first horizontal row.
  • Keep the base clipped down for the first three rows of the walls.
  • Add new strips under two rows, never at a corner, or the corner bulges.
  • Mist the leaf as you go; dry strips split exactly at the fold line.

  1. Weave and square the base, then clip it down.
  2. Fold all uprights to vertical and check the corners.
  3. Weave the walls to full height, adding strips under two rows.
  4. Fold the rim over and tuck every end into the weave.
  5. Thread the cord handle and knot it inside.
  6. Let the bag dry for two days before carrying anything heavy.

A fresh palm leaf bag is soft for about two days. Let it dry fully before you load it, or the base will sag out of shape.
